2019-2020 BUILD SEASON TO CONTINUE!! The Las Cruces City Council approved aid to the local Habitat for Humanity, which has been affected by the novel coronavirus pandemic, and switched the funding source for a local microloan assistance program at a special meeting Friday. The meeting was held via Zoom video chat to conform to physical distancing guidance. The council voted unanimously to spend $65,000 from the city's General Fund to help the Mesilla Valley Habitat for Humanity. The money will go toward paying contractors to complete five homes under construction, the city said. Due to the effects of COVID-19, the city said Habitat for Humanity hasn't been able to use its volunteer corps. The council also voted to pull $74,500 from the General Fund for a program that provides technical assistance for small businesses attempting to secure microloans. Last week, the council approved $74,500 for the same microloan program from the city's Telshor Facility Fund. That funding will return to the Telshor Fund, and instead the city will use the funding approved Friday. So far, the city has approved about $1.7 million in economic aid to address the coronavirus' effects using money from the Telshor Fund, a reserve fund endowed from the city’s share of lease payments made by the private operators of Memorial Medical Center. The purpose of the Telshor Fund is to provide health-related public services and prioritizes improving "the lives of sick, indigent or low income people of the City of Las Cruces," according to city law.
