Mesilla Valley Habitat for Humanity Kicks off its 2016-2017 Build Season

Las Cruces, NM (October 3, 2016) —. On Monday, Oct. 3, 2016, Mesilla Valley Habitat for Humanity celebrated “ World Habitat Day” and joined with their partners around the globe to rededicate themselves to their philosophy; everyone deserves a simple, decent place to live. Volunteers, staff, board members, partner families, Care-A-Vanners, and many community supporters, helped raise the walls on the 106th Habitat house: joining the global movement vowing to lend their voices and their time, toward ending poverty housing.

“ In honor of World Habitat Day, we raised the walls on one of five, new houses that will soon become homes for five hardworking, local families!” stated Maria Vasquez, Executive Director of Mesilla Valley Habitat for Humanity. “ By building alongside one another, we are able to put our mission into action. We invite everyone who is able, to join us on the build site whenever possible- help us give a hand up, not a hand out to our neighbors in need.”

World Habitat Day is the one day set aside yearly to recognize the basic right of all humanity to adequate shelter, and to inspire grassroots action toward ending poverty housing. The United Nations General Assembly declared in 1985 that the first Monday in October would be World Habitat Day.

Over 30 people showed up on site, ready to build. Skillfully led by Pete Pemperton (Construction Supervisor) and Dyana Todd (Construction Assistant), the walls went up fairly quickly. “ The construction team makes sure that everyone has job to do, a valuable job.” Says one volunteer about the experience, “ Nobody goes home feeling like they didn’t contribute to the actual construction of the home and nobody goes home without sore muscles either. “

Care-A-Vanners travel in their RV’s to participate in builds across the nation. Some are new to Las Cruces and others are repeat visitors to the MVHFH affiliate.

Operations Coordinator, Yvette Bayless participated in her first build this year, along with many others. “ I am overwhelmed with the amount of dedication our volunteers have.” Said Yvette. “ Some travel from all over the country to be here and work on their own dime. We could not do this without them, and without community support from businesses like Little Caesars, Dunkin Donuts, and Alberstons, who provided meals and snacks to our hardworking volunteers.”

The build season continues into April, 2017. If you would like more information or would like to volunteer, please contact Yvette Bayless. 575.525.0475
